Rango

Rango (2011)This is a really fresh and fascinating movie. The animation technique made by Industrial Light & Magic is really good, but the best part is the story, especially the first half: it’s a movie that takes a look at a lot of classical westerns like High Noon, but it is especially reminiscent of Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns. There are lots of good and adult jokes and excellent script sentences, there are also quite a few great action sequences, and especially several wonderful characters. The work of Johnny Depp in the original version is quite good. The movie deals about truth, lie, selfishness, self-improvement, and I think it is a better movie for adults that for children. A good election to enjoy a good evening.

The King's Speech

The King's Speech posterOf course, after the Oscars I have to write a review of this movie. It is a very good example of the British cinema to show the moments of their history and their political figures. Colin Firth makes a very credible work as George VI and you can feel his fear and pressure during several moments of the film. The dramatic moments are very well mixed and linked with some details of comedy, very well supported by Geoffrey Rush who works as well as usual in these cases. Helena Bonham Carter makes a good connection between the two main characters. The atmosphere and the environment of the royal family and the critical moments of this period of the history are very well reflected. You can feel that the director Tom Hooper knows very well what he is doing during the full film.

True Grit

True Grit posterThis is a good remake of the classical film by Henry Hathaway, with John Wayne, in 1969. This new version is slightly more focused on the point of view of the young girl Mattie Ross, fantastically played by Hailee Steinfeld, but some parts, even the conversations, are almost an exact copy of the old version although updated to the current cinema. Jeff Bridges makes simply wonderful work and he is without a doubt in the best moment of his career. Matt Damon and Josh Brolin work very correctly as well. The atmosphere is very well captured with good details of the old typical westerns and good photography, but at the same time well seasoned with modern ingredients, like the real dirtiness and the explicit violence of the last quarter of the XIXth century in those places. A good film by the Coens.

Black Swan

Black Swan posterThis is a movie about rivalry, competition, art, evolution, obsession, effort, dance and "losing of control"... in this case to achieve the "perfection". All the actors made a fantastic work; specially the small character of Winona Ryder as broken doll, the loving manipulator Barbara Hershey as Nina’s mother, the great Vincent Cassell in a perfect role for him, and of course… the amazing Natalie Portman who, in my opinion, has now ascended to a new level with this movie. I’m sure she is going to won the Oscar this year. Aronofsky has squeezed all the juice to his actors, and he focused almost the full movie in Portman, giving her the chance to show that she has become a fantastic actress. The result is an absolutely beautiful movie, aesthetically and musically speaking, and it is a new good work by this great director, playing with the reality, the fantasy and the madness, to chase a dream.

Kick-Ass

In my opinion this is a kind of film that you can love or you can directly hate. There is not a middle point. This movie is sometimes comedy, sometimes surrealistic and sometimes even drama, but all immerse in a frenetic rhythm full of jokes and hyper-violence. This is the story of a geek (Aaron Johnson) that decides to be a superhero called Kick-Ass that shows some brilliant points during the film. But the best part is the performance made by Nicholas Cage (Big Daddy), because it was the first time that this actor made me laugh… and of course the performance of the little girl Chloë Moretz (Hit Girl) who was absolutely incredible. I think she is the soul of this movie.

Several moments of some of the actors during the movie, trying to be pathetic superheroes, are brilliantly mixed with amazing real action sequences absolutely typical of the classic superhero films and almost worthy of the best Sam Raimi. The expression for me to describe this film is: this movie is ridiculously entertaining, a kind of mix between “Watch men” and “American pie” but very well done to enjoy a fun night of cinema. I recommend it.

Two lovers

This is a very interesting film that was a surprise for me. I saw the James Gray movie “We Own The Night” three years ago, and I really liked it, but this time this director entered in the field of the love relationships with a wisdom absolutely amazing. Maybe this is the best character that Joaquin Phoenix has ever played, in a bipolar role very well done. Gwyneth Paltrow works also very very well with a praiseworthy maturity. The director shows a wet, cold and solitary NY that could be also an important part of the movie like an extra character. The script is very good… and the looks, sad, happy, disappointing or quiet, that you can see during the full movie are a vital component of the film. I’ll follow the future work of this guy, James Gray. I think most of people could feel that some of the moment or the situation showed in the film could fit with some moment lived along their lives. Very recommendable film.
